Policy Brief: Media Literacy That Acknowledges Different Groups As a Pillar of National Information Resilience
Media and information literacy (MIL) is a key factor in strengthening both national and EU-wide security, as well as in countering the erosion of public trust. To support societal resilience, MIL must be recognized as part of comprehensive security, and its development requires concrete actions.
Together with the IMAGINE consortium, we have published a policy brief that highlights the following areas for development:
1. Integrating MIL into comprehensive security and national strategy
MIL that considers the needs of diverse communities should be incorporated into Finland’s National Society Security Strategy, approved in January 2025. This calls for increased resources and capabilities within public administration and among educators.
2. Coordinated development of inclusive educational materials
Stakeholders must collaborate to produce new teaching materials that reflect the needs of different communities across all levels of education, including adult learning.
3. The role of national media in fostering understanding
The national media plays a central role in MIL efforts by promoting mutual understanding and inclusive representation of various groups.
