This lecture focuses on the potential uses of machine translation in different stages of research work, helps to understand its limitations, and provides recommendations for its responsible use.

Advances in neural machine translation and more recently generative AI powered by large language models have made automated translation commonplace in everyday life.

What potential solutions can these tools offer for researchers? What considerations should a researcher keep in mind when working with automated translation tools?

The lecture examines the potential uses of automated translation in research, from collecting or analysing data to reading or writing research papers, as well as the limitations and recommendations for responsible use.

The lecturer

Maarit Koponen is Professor of Translation Studies specialising in translation technology at University of Eastern Finland. Her research interests include, among others, the quality and usability of machine translations from the perspective of translators and other users.
